A Note from the Founder

“Our hands, whether creating or caring, move with the heart behind them.”

tonafu was created out of a desire to make something meaningful, something that gently supports both myself and those close to me.

Growing up with Japanese heritage, I was shaped by a culture that holds deep respect for nature and the quiet beauty of everyday life. That path led me to study Traditional Chinese Medicine in Australia, deepening my understanding of its profound belief in plants as medicine, gentle yet powerful, woven into the rhythms of life. That understanding is the foundation of how I think about skincare.

「調ふ - tonafu is an old Japanese word meaning “in a state of balance.” Quiet, comfortable, steady. That is the intention behind everything tonafu creates.

What we wish to convey is the philosophy of Yojo — 養生 — the Eastern practice of nourishing life. Yojo is not about dramatic change. It is a way of living, the accumulation of small, mindful acts of daily care that sustain the wellbeing of the body and mind. tonafu designs its skincare around that spirit.

Our formulas use medicinal herbs and plants that Traditional Japanese Medicine* has trusted for generations — handled with honesty and curiosity, to create gentle skincare that guides skin and spirit back to harmony. tonafu’s formulas are not recreations of ancient recipes. They are developed for what we need today, to inherit the wisdom of the past, embrace evolution, and hold balance as the guide. That matters deeply to us.
